Colour Vision Testing
At Concord Eyecare, we offer colour vision testing for both adults and children, using some of the most innovative technology available in Sydney. Whether you’re concerned about your child’s early development or you work in a profession where accurate colour perception is critical, our tests will provide the insights you need.
Why It Matters For Children:
Early detection of colour vision deficiencies can be crucial for a child’s success in school and daily life. Children with undiagnosed colour vision issues may struggle with tasks like identifying colours in learning environments, which can affect both confidence and academic performance.
Why It Matters For Adults:
Many professions require accurate colour perception, and a colour vision deficiency can impact your career. Occupations such as electricians, pilots, designers, and Defence Force personnel often have strict colour vision requirements.
Our Testing
Medmont C100
The Medmont C100 is a highly regarded colour vision test specifically designed for occupational screening. This test is widely used in industries where accurate colour perception is critical, such as aviation, electrical work, and healthcare. The C100 evaluates the ability to distinguish between different shades of red and green, the most common area of colour deficiency. Its precision makes it an essential tool for employers and individuals looking to ensure they meet the necessary vision standards for safety-critical jobs. Results from the Medmont C100 are quick and reliable, offering clear pass/fail criteria.
Farnsworth D15
The Farnsworth D15 test provides a deeper analysis of both the type and severity of a person’s colour vision deficiency. It requires patients to arrange coloured discs in order based on hue, and the patterns of their mistakes reveal specific types of deficiencies, such as red-green or blue-yellow. Unlike simple screening tests, the Farnsworth D15 offers a more nuanced understanding of how severe the deficiency is and its potential impact on daily tasks or job performance. This test is particularly useful for those in professions where fine colour discrimination is required, like design or visual arts.
Ishihara 36 Plate Test
The Ishihara 36 Plate Test is one of the most widely used tests for diagnosing red-green colour vision deficiencies, also known as protanomaly or deutanomaly. During the test, patients are shown a series of plates with coloured dots arranged in patterns that form numbers or shapes. Individuals with normal colour vision can easily distinguish these patterns, while those with a deficiency will struggle or be unable to see them. The Ishihara test is quick, easy to administer, and is highly effective in detecting moderate to severe red-green deficiencies, making it ideal for both children and adults.
HRR Pseudoisochromatic Plates
The HRR Pseudoisochromatic Plates test goes beyond simple red-green detection by also identifying blue-yellow deficiencies (tritanomaly), which are less common but can have significant implications. Similar to the Ishihara test, this method uses coloured plates with embedded symbols or patterns. However, the HRR test is more versatile as it can differentiate between the severity of deficiencies and also covers a wider range of colour vision problems. This test is particularly useful for individuals in professions where distinguishing between subtle variations in colour is crucial, such as quality control, transportation, or the arts.
